Revolutionaries and the Struggle for India's Freedom: A Historical and Ideological Study

Abstract

This study examines the historical and ideological contributions of revolutionaries to the Indian freedom struggle, situating their efforts within the broader anti-colonial movement. Drawing on archival records, memoirs, and scholarly works, the research highlights the multifaceted impact of revolutionary activities, from disrupting colonial administration to inspiring public resistance through symbolic acts of sacrifice. It traces the ideological evolution of the movement from cultural nationalism and spiritual revivalism to socialist and Marxist visions of post-independence India. The findings reveal the regional breadth of revolutionary activity, spanning Bengal, Punjab, Maharashtra, the North-East, and beyond, as well as transnational connections with global anti-imperialist movements in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Ireland. The study also addresses the historiographical marginalisation of revolutionaries in mainstream narratives, advocating for a balanced portrayal that recognises their strategic innovations, ideological clarity, and enduring legacy. By integrating historical analysis with thematic categorisation, this research restores the revolutionary tradition to its rightful place in the history of India’s struggle for sovereignty, offering a richer understanding of the diversity of strategies that shaped the nation’s path to independence.
