Abstract

This study on recycled aggregates (RCA) examines their use in pavement construction from the perspectives of ecology, performance, and practicality, therefore assessing them critically. Used combined with or in instead of organic gravel in roads, RCA can have various effects on machines, the environment, and human health. This review aims to compile the most recent studies on these topics. The method consists of a thorough study of peer-reviewed literature, regulations, and experimental data on various mix proportions, treatment processes, and performance assessment of RCA-based materials. Compressive strength, versatility, endurance, absorption of water, and environmental effect are the primary subjects discussed in depth. The results of the studied studies indicate that while RCA exhibits somewhat lower mechanical performance than conventional aggregates, when properly treated and paired with maximised mix designs it can satisfy acceptable engineering criteria for pavement applications. Moreover, RCA use significantly helps environmental preservation by means of reducing landfill waste, lowering the production of greenhouse gases, and lessening the consumption of natural resources.
